Holy Spirit, come!

By Helen Jesze, 9th June 2019

“And when the Day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a mighty, rushing wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance,”

Acts 2, 1- 4 KJV

This is Pentecost weekend, when we remember how the Holy Spirit was poured out on the 120 disciples of Jesus, filling them with courage and boldness, preparing them to go out and take the message of Jesus to the whole world. Years ago in England, this weekend was called ‘Whitsun’ and the following Monday was a Bank Holiday, when we used to have many conferences or conventions as they were then called. It was in a Pentecost convention on the Monday, at the very last meeting, the Holy Spirit came and filled me (I was 14 at the time), and I spoke in these “new tongues” or “prayer language”.

The building was not shaken, nobody could see any tongues of fire on my head, but since then I have often felt the fire of the Holy Spirit. The Third Person of the Trinity, as much God as God the Father and Jesus the Son, nevertheless the Holy Spirit has often been neglected, pushed into a theological corner, grieved and his Being and power denied by countless Christians. I thank God for His Holy Spirit and know that He has come to my aid thousands of times.

Sometimes He comes as a rushing mighty wind, sometimes as the gentle Dove. It does not necessarily depend on our temperament, believing that if we are an emotional person we will experience a noisy, infilling of the Spirit. My father was a very quiet, undemonstrative man, but the night he was baptised in the Spirit he was so drunk they had to carry him home, and it was a while before he could speak English again!

Also in our meetings, as we minister, we have seen the Holy Spirit deal so gently with those who are broken and vulnerable, but other times He shows Himself differently. I remember one time in Holland, there were about 800 people in the meeting, and after George preached he invited those who needed prayer to come to the front. People started to come and we were praying for them. Suddenly the anointing became greater and when the people came to about two feet away from us, they fell down, overcome by the power of the Spirit.

One of the elders was running around trying to catch people, saying, “This shouldn’t be! This shouldn’t be happening!” We had nothing to do with it! Jesus is the Head of the Church and He decides how to meet with people at the point of their need, and in what manner. When we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, he can do more in seconds than years of counselling might not accomplish, although we know that there is also a place for counselling. God was working mightily in them and as we had to leave for another meeting, the church’s prayer team carried on praying. We heard later that this had never happened in that church before and some were there for 1-2 hours.

And what about you? Have you been filled with or baptised in the Holy Spirit? In these days in which we live, where satan is pouring out his evil spirits to capture men and women, boys and girls, where ‘even the very elect can be deceived’ we need His power and discernment more than ever before. I want to encourage you to ask Jesus (Luke 3, 16 tells us He is the One who does this) to fill you! You may have asked before and it seems nothing has happened, don’t give up! The Father wants to give this “good gift to those who seek Him”, and you will not be disappointed!

Or perhaps you have been baptised in the Spirit but you no longer speak in tongues. This is one of the first things satan wants to take from us, stopping up our spiritual well, for he knows the power that it brings. Stir up your spirit again and in faith begin to speak out in tongues, charging your spiritual batteries, flushing out the debris in your inner man, fighting victories in the spirit world, speaking out the Will of the Father! Receive your personal Pentecost today!
