The ‘Angel’ in the Surgeon’s Coat!

By Helen Jesze, 2018

“Are they (the angels) not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

Hebrews 1, 14

“… and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us ‘”

Matthew 1, 23b

A good friend, Jackie, gave an amazing testimony at Church recently. In May she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and in June, was due for an operation. She had had some low moments, but on the whole she was able to believe that all would be well, and that God would see her through this.

But as the day for the operation arrived, she was attacked by fear, especially as she remembered a bad experience in the past during an operation. Bill, her husband, was with her and she was taken to where two other ladies were waiting; she was put into the third cubicle. As she lay there, Jackie was desperately praying under her breath: “God, I know you are with me, but give me some sign that you are here, that you are with me!

Soon the operating surgeons came and talked with their patients. Jackie was still praying for a sign from the Lord, when she heard the surgeon in the next cubicle say: “Hallo, my name is Immanuel and it means God is with us!” Jackie could hardly believe her ears! “Bill, did you hear what he said? His name is Immanuel and it means God is with us?!” Yes, Bill had heard it too! Jackie had received her ‘sign’ from God – Immanuel was with her and would not let her down! But more was to follow…

After Jackie was wheeled off to Theatre, Bill said to one of the nurses: “Can you tell me something about the surgeon whose name is Immanuel?” The nurse looked up inquiringly and said: “We don’t have a surgeon called Immanuel anywhere in the hospital!”

God had sent his angel, with a message for Jackie and Bill; they could not see him, but they could hear him. To the lady in the second cubicle, the surgeon must have said something else, but the Holy Spirit caused them to hear these wonderful words!

God knows just where we are. He is with us in our lowest moments, when our back is against the wall, when we can see no light at the end of the tunnel, when satan bombards our minds with his lies, when friends or family forsake and disown us, when we see no way out and feel a failure, when the promises of God seem a mockery and we have lost the ground under our spiritual and mental feet.

Because He is the Creator, our Heavenly Father can make ways where there would be no way, he just creates a new one! Whether he sends us an angel as He did with Jackie or uses some other less spectacular method, our God is faithful and will show Himself to those who cry out to Him!

Be encouraged today, Immanuel is with you! It is not just a Bible verse we quote at Christmas time, but for the whole year and in any situation, we can proclaim: Immanuel – God with you and God with me – God with us for Time and eternity!
