“ (Jesus said) I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the
Beginning and the End.” Rev. 22:13 NIV
Recently I have been thinking about all the names which have been given to our
Saviour, Jesus Christ – some He gave to Himself– and other names come from
different parts of the Bible, or in experiences we have gone through. I would like to
share a few of them.
To the baker – He is the Bread of Life.
To the builder – He is the Chief Corner-Stone.
To the shepherd – He is the Great Shepherd and the Door to the sheep.
To the jeweller – the Pearl of Great Price.
To the doctor – He is the Great Physician.
To the astronomer – the Bright and Morning Star.
To the gardener – He is the True Vine, Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the Valley.
To the beautician – the Altogether Lovely One.
To the hopeless – the God of all Hope.
To the thirsty – He is the Water of Life.
To the fatherless – the Everlasting Father.
To the sick – the Great Healer.
To the watch-maker – the God of Time and Eternity.
To the lamp-maker – the Light of the World.
To the war-wagers – He is the Prince of Peace.
To the politician – the One whose Government is on His Shoulder.
To the dressmaker – the One who makes a Garment of Praise.
To the teacher – the world’s Greatest Teacher and Master of all things.
To the weary – the One who gives true Rest.
To the judge – the One who pardons mistakes and wrong-doing.
To the sinful – He is the Saviour.
To the sad and grieving – the God of all Comfort.
To the policeman – the One who seeks to bring Law and Order.
To the bound – the One who sets the prisoners free, and ‘led captivity captive’.
To those looking for a deliverer – He is the Messiah, God’s Anointed One.
To those who are solitary – He sets them in families.
To the burdened – He is the great Burden-bearer.
To the advisor – He is the Counsellor.
To the lonely – He is the Friend who sticks closer than a brother.
To the confused – He is the Restorer of Paths to dwell in.
To the lost – He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
To the inventor – He is the Creator of all things.
To kings and queens – He is the King above all kings.
To lords and ladies – He is Lord of lords.
To the lawyer – He fulfils the Law and the Prophets.
To those who are seeking – He is the Answer to every need.
To the butcher – He’s the Lamb of God.
To the cleaner – He’s the One who washes white as snow.
To the zoo-keeper – He is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah.
To those who are in danger – He is their Refuge.
To the captain – He’s the Commander of Heaven’s armies…
And so we could go on!! We could search the whole world through and never find
anyone who could fulfil all these purposes and be given these titles. But our Alpha
and Omega – the Beginning and the End encompasses all things, and we have the
privilege of becoming His Child and living in Him, for “in Him we live and move
and have our being” – not just for Time but through all Eternity!
Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, how wonderful you are! How precious to our
souls – truly you are all that we need. We have discovered in our lives that
You have become many of these titles to us, showing us a new facet of Your
character. But we will never run out of new discoveries, as we experience
Your love and greatness to us. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!
