A Daughter of the King!
Devotional by Helen Jesze, 8th May 2015
„Daughters of kings are among your honoured women; at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir…All glorious is the princess…In embroidered garments she is led to the King…“
Psalm 45: 9,13,14 NIV
She’s here at last! Saturday 2nd May, Princess Charlotte, Elizabeth, Diana – 4th in line to the throne, a sister for big brother George, was born into the British Royal Family. We heartily congratulate Prince Willam and Princess Catherine on the birth of their second child, and pray God will bless this family and reveal Himself to them!
Little Charlotte is not the ‘daughter of a king’, for her father has not yet
succeeded to the throne. But in the middle of the 1980’s, this phrase came
forcefully to me – let me explain.
One evening I was reading the international „Women’s Aglow“ magazine, and read how a small group of American women went to Moscow and prayed, until God led them to some Russian Christian women. They took them back to their hotel room and invited them to choose anything they wanted from their suitcases.
One little lady found a beautiful lavender coloured sweater, and with a beaming face, put it carefully on over her worn brown dress. The writer of the article then went on to say: „She looked just like the daughter of a king“! That phrase just leaped into my spirit, and „Daughter of a King“ action was born.
At the time I was leading a German „Aglow“ group, not far from Stuttgart. I sent out a letter to friends and „Aglow“ visitors, and soon hundreds of small, inexpensive but carefully chosen gifts were arriving. My workers and I made up colourful parcels, with a messagecard stuck on each of them. My husband, George, was about to make his first trip to Romania, to coincide with the publishing of our book „Winning over Worry“ in Romanian, and he would be preaching in several churches.
From our experience of living in Germany and working amongst people from eastern Europe, I was well aware how the Christian women especially, had suffered. The Communist regime and cultural traditions had put tremendous burdens upon them. This was multiplied because many churches taught that any form of birth control was a sin. (I am not referring here to the Roman Catholic Church.) In some churches, the elders would even ask some wives why they were not pregnant again!
Large families – 8,10,12,15 plus children were the norm – with Christians having the lowest paid jobs and little or no government help – and sometimes the husbands in prison for their faith! How were they to feed all of these little ones?!
Yes, I thought, we must bless our Sisters in Romania. They needed to know that they were also made „in the image of God“ – and were a ‘daughter of the King’! So every gift card had a message in the Romanian language, referring to Psalm 45, and telling the lady who received it that through Jesus she had been accepted into God’s family and was now „A Daughter of the King“; she was precious in His sight. The card also read that Christians in the West had not forgotten them but were praying for them.
When George later distributed these gifts after his services in Romania, many women cried for joy, saying they could not believe that something so special was being given to them, and some had never received a gift before in their life!
In 1988, George and I helped Evangelist David Hathaway from England, to organise his first Eurovision conference in Karlsruhe, Germany, (nothing to do with the Eurovision song contest!). Thousands of people came from western and eastern Europe, but when in the following year the Berlin Wall came down and all of the Communist countries borders came open, allowing whoever wanted to come to the West, then many more groups came to the 1989 conference.
So we organised another „A Daughter of the King „ action, this time with the messages in Russian, Bulgarian, Hungarian and other eastern European languages. As each lady received her gift parcel, she was prayed for by one of the „Aglow“ workers. We may not have understood each other very much, but a loving hug and such words as „JESUS“ and „Hallelujah!“ are the universal language of Love, and so we were able to communicate! Tears of joy and the anointing of the Holy Spirit flowed and blessed these precious women!
But this is also true today. Do you know that you can be a ‘daughter of the King’, by accepting Jesus Christ into your heart and life? „To as many as received Him, to them gave He the right to become sons and daughters of God.“
Also, for those of us who are already Christians, when we are discouraged or on a ‘bad hair day’ we might look in the mirror and think: „What?! I sure don’t look or feel like a ‘daughter of the king’! A princess?!“ But feelings can be our greatest enemy. What counts, is what God’s Word says about us and not how we feel!
Whatever we have done, wherever we come from, the blood of Jesus can wash us clean, and justify us – making us ‘just as if we had never sinned’. He will give us a brand new life and cause us to hold our head up, not in pride, but in the assurance that He is our righteousness and He has done the work in us!
Let’s pray together:
Lord Jesus, thank you for making me your ‘daughter’! Teach me to walk in this truth day by day. I crown you again as my Lord of Lords and King of Kings, and praise your holy Name! Amen.
