A Trysting Place!

“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love,”
1 John 4:8 NIV
“…He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted…”
Isaiah 61:1 NIV
I knew he was coming. I felt him draw near.
His presence and glory preceded his ‘tangible’ form.
Not seeing, not knowing why, how and wherefore
Yet knowing that he was coming to meet me.
A trysting-place one would have called it years ago,
Where two lovers come to meet and show their love;
Where words are spoken fit only for the other’s ears
And hidden away in the heart;
Secrets and intimacies are shared, understood only by these two,
My Heavenly Bridegroom and I.
Longing to hold him, I stretch out my physical arms to embrace,
And know he wraps his spiritual arms around me.
He is real, as real as the air I breathe.
His presence envelops me. Thrilling my inner being with rapture,
Comfort, assurance and security wash around and through me,
Lulling me to peace, in the midst of the storm.
No-one like you, Jesus Christ, Lord of my life!
No-one like you! He whispers in return.
No-one like you, child of my heart!
As I lay against this heart, I catch the beat, the throb
Urgent, strong, with longing, intensity and agony
The throb of Love unrequited, unreturned, spurned
Rejected by millions of his own creatures.
Yet this love still streams out. It cannot stop,
For then he would cease to exist, for he is Love.
This is the risk of Love, the risk that the loved one
Will not return love, but will laugh and scorn
Such a marvellous treasure.
But you went further than this risk, Lord Jesus,
You stepped right over it, ignoring its doubts and its fears,
Ran to meet me with outstretched arms, welcoming,
Inviting me to have fellowship – to become your’s alone!
Take this Calvary-Love! Let it flow from my heart into your’s.
Now you be a carrier, a bearer of this love to all those
Who have not yet experienced it, I hear you command
For I came to heal the broken hearts in this world.
