After YOU, Lord, will I run!!

“Draw me, we will run after thee …”

Song of Solomon 1:4a KJV

I’ll doubt my doubts and doubt my fears and trust in Him who through the years Has guided me and He should know, surely the way that I must go. His gracious face it smiles on me, He calls and my reply will be: You have drawn me, I will come, After you, Lord, will I run!

Lovely Jesus, Pearl divine, greater than all treasures mine – Rarer than the lily fair blooming in the garden there. Wondrous, shining, Morning Star, Light upon my path you are. Comfort of my lonely hour, turns my thorn into a flower.

Takes me through the waters deep, keeps my often faltering feet – Causes them to jump and run, makes my path a plain straight one. Brings me through the furnace heat, in earth’s sorrows gives comfort sweet, Unsinged, unharmed, no fiery smell, for Jesus doeth all things well!

Makes my desert bud and flower. His Name is like a mighty tower, All are safe who run within, safe from danger, fear and sin. Lovely Jesus, Pearl divine, greater than all treasures mine. You have called me, I will come – After you, Lord, will I run!

Recently I came across this poem which I wrote several years ago, as I was thinking about this new year. The very first line arrested and challenged me that should any doubts or fears arise in my heart and mind, I should not let them take root, but I should doubt those very doubts, and doubt those very fears!! Instead, I should make the decision to trust this One who has guided me so many years, has proved his faithfulness in difficult or deadly circumstances, and can be utterly depended on!

These words have also been ringing through my spirit — After you, Lord, will I run! After you, Lord… and the following strong thought or rather, the question –

What or whom am I running after ?!

Am I running after things, experiences, solutions, material goods, the accolades of people, fame and fortune? This does not mean that all these things are necessarily wrong, but if they are our FIRST thought, if we are running after them; if we want them at any price, regardless of how many heads we tread on in our race to the top – to obtain them – , then that is not God’s best for our life!

The book Song of Solomon in the Bible depicts a love story between the king and his bride. He calls her to rise up and come away with him, for the time of love has come. She replies that because he has drawn her, she will run after him. The whole Book is also an allegory of our Saviour Jesus Christ and his love for the Church, his Bride, and our Heavenly Bridegroom is calling us today to come away with him. He is drawing us, wooing us by the Holy Spirit into a closer relationship with him than we have ever had before.

Will we reply by running after him, or will we run after the 1001 distractions which Life and Satan make seem so tempting?! Or are we just running amok, just anywhere, in circles, expending our energy for nothing, instead of running focused, to a goal, to his assigned plan for us – all of these we find in this Lover of our soul, Jesus Christ!

Lovely Jesus, Pearl divine, greater than all treasures mine. You have called me, I will come – After you, Lord, will I run!

Who are YOU running after in 2022? Let it be HIM! Let’s run TOGETHER!
