Eagle Vision or Spiritual Vision?!

By Helen Jesze, 25th November 2022

Passing an optician’s shop, I saw a large poster in the window which depicted an eagle and the words:

An eagle doesn’t need an eye-test – BUT YOU DO!!

Eagles have a highly developed sense of sight which allows them to easily spot prey. I read they have excellent 20/5 vision compared to an average human who only has 20/20 vision. This means eagles can see things from 20 feet away that we can only see from 5 feet away, allowing them to see clearly about eight times as far as humans can! An eagle is said to be able to spot a rabbit for his dinner 3.2km (2 miles) away!

I smiled at the poster. Yes, it was right, there is no comparison between an eagle and a human’s eyes. They certainly did not need a pair of specs!

Having developed cataracts, I had several special eye-tests. In May 2021 they operated on my left eye, where the old lense was taken out and an artificial one was put in. Before the surgery, I had not been able to see anything at all in that eye for about one year, only light or dark. Afterwards, a new world opened up, crystal clear and with bright colours!

This September I had surgery on my right eye, and after eight weeks, went to get some new glasses. The old glasses were no longer any good; a procedure had been done and now a change had come about. I now had different vision.

The Bible has much to say about “sight” and “vision”, physical and spiritual. Jesus healed many people who were blind. Sometimes he touched them, sometimes spoke the Word, one time he spat on the ground, made a muddy paste and spread it on the man’s eyes, telling him to go and wash, and he would be healed. In Mark 8:25-26 we read that when Jesus was healing a blind man, the man “looked up. I see men. They look like walking trees. So Jesus laid hands on his eyes again. The man looked hard and realized that he had recovered perfect sight, saw everything in bright, twenty-twenty focus.” THE MESSAGE BIBLE

2 Corinthians 4:4 tells that the god of this age (Satan) has blinded those who do not believe. Every human-being born on this earth has blind spiritual eyes, blind to spiritual values. But God sent Jesus “..to open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.” Acts 26:18

Paul, the Apostle, said to King Agrippa, “I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven”, meaning the calling, the vision to carry the Gospel to the Jews and the Gentiles, which Jesus had given him. When we give our life to Jesus and become born-again, our spiritual eyes are opened – new vision. Even like the man who first saw men who looked like trees, then later he could see clearly, that was a progressive healing. As we grow in our Christian walk, there is also a progression. We gain spiritual insight and understanding. God will speak to us too, and give us “callings” and “visions”. It may not be a physical vision, but God has plans and spiritual visions and inward illumination, to give to us.

One way God increases our inward sight and vision is by the reading of his Word, the Bible. We read the Psalmist prays in Psalm 119:18 –

“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”

NLT

Yes, this Word is full of wonderful things! This is a prayer that God loves to answer. So I would encourage you today to reach out for new vision and let’s expect new truths to burst upon our horizon, as our eyes receive new spiritual clarity!
