Whom the Son sets free!

By Helen Jesze, 23rd June 2023

Today for our devotional, I just want to share another of my poems with you, as people have often said they are blessed reading them. The Lord gave me this poem as I was praying for a young man who had once been a Christian. Many families today have one or more family members – parents or children – who were once Christians, but for some reason have now stopped following the Lord. The old lie from Satan that, at least you need to know what you are missing, then if you want you can decide to return to Jesus, is one that he often uses to deceive us, particularly our young people.

But God is still in the restoring business, and while on the one hand there is much evil and confusion in the spiritual sense, despite what many people think, there is a great heart-hunger to find God nowadays. We see this clearly when we read about the revivals that have swept across college campuses in America during the past months, with hundreds of young people finding Jesus. So let’s be encouraged today that God still answers prayer and his Holy Spirit is working in the hearts of those we love and for whom we are interceding! Be blessed as you read this poem.

Prodigal Sons and Daughters

Prodigal sons and daughters with feet that wander away Trampling upon a moral code, God’s laws and God’s ways. Wide eyes search for new things, look to horizons afar Hands throw off what seem like chains, seek for a beckoning star. Bodies that long for excitement — the drug, the needle, the glue, The booze, the weed, the pills, the rave, Ecstacy, snow, for you! Stark heat and thrill of passion — love, sex if they want every day. Every dream you could ever dream. My way, they say, my way!

Pendulums, crystals and magic, Ouija-board, contact the dead Lured by the unseen world of occult, caught in the spider’s web. Prodigal ears that are hearing the sound of the tempter’s voice. Prodigal eyes now seeing things which should not be their choice. Turned from the God of their fathers, wisdom sent from above To a heart that this world has to offer, romance without true love. Bubbles that burst at the touching, buds that could never flower. Words that hold no substance which fail in the crucial hour.

Nothing to fill that great longing, the emptiness deep down inside. No light to pierce through the blackness, nowhere to run and hide. No-one to lift the burden, no-one to set them free. No-one to stop their headlong rush to Hell – for eternity!

But God who is rich in mercy has followed them on their flight. His voice is calling them in love from darkness back to light. In the spirit-world he is working although it’s not yet seen. He’ll heal backslidings, freely love, as though it had never been.

Come to yourselves, sons and daughters, throw off the coils of sin. Let the Word that’s buried in your heart grow, come to life again. Rise up from where you’re sitting and make the decision to come Back to the love that waits for you, back to the Father and Home!

Sunrise, man breaks his chains
