Wills and Valentines!

In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. 1 Peter 1:3b-4a NIV

Wills and Valentines!

By Helen Jesze, 2022

“For His divine power has bestowed on us [absolutely] everything necessary for [a dynamic spiritual] life and godliness, through true and personal knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”

2 Peter 1:3 Amplified Bible

Today I was thinking of Wills and Testaments. It’s always good to make one if you are older, but also when you’re younger! Sometimes people are very happy at what they have inherited, others are furious, thinking they have been swindled or forgotten by the person who died. Many go to Court to contest a Will. We knew someone who did this. A Will can also be humorous. We heard of a man who once left a pair of his trousers to his wife with the note:

“My dear, when I was alive, you were very bossy and wanted to ‘wear the trousers’, so I’ve left you a pair of mine!!”

I’m sure she must have been very angry when the solicitor read this out, at the reading of the Will! I don’t know if she received anything else as an inheritance!

A Will only comes into force after a person has died, and I heard of something that was very touching. A couple had been married over 40 years and he died in 2017. In the year following his death, on Valentine’s Day, a bouquet of red roses and lilies was delivered to his wife, with a special card which read: You’ll always be my Valentine! Every year since, she has received this beautiful delivery. Before his death, her husband ordered and paid in advance for this to happen. How many years he paid for, I don’t know! What a marvellous surprise it must have been for her, and so heart- warming at this imaginative, loving gesture.

In the above Bible verses we read how Jesus through his death and resurrection has bought an inheritance for each person who will take him as their Saviour. This inheritance is being kept in Heaven for us, and one day we will enter into that inheritance of Eternity with him. However, already while we are here on Earth, he has given us all things that we need for a dynamic spiritual life, because we have got to know him as our Saviour and have answered the call of this glorious, excellent One.

Salvation, a new birth, forgiveness, power to overcome sin, eternal life, guidance, wisdom, protection, healing, deliverance from satan’s power, marvellous promises, the Word of God – the Bible, peace of mind, joy, strength in trials … the list is endless, the inheritance our Saviour has bought for us. His Will is made known to us in his Word. Let’s study it and make each blessing our own. How tragic that we often do not know or enter into all that is in our inheritance.

So dear friend, I would like to encourage you to find out what’s in the Will for YOU and claim it by faith today, and enter into a new level, a new era of this marvellous life in Jesus!
